Cask No. 8092: The Whisky That Proves Dr Bill Lumsden Right

Some projects take thirty years to prove themselves. This one just did. Glenmorangie Cask No. 8092 is a rare, limited-release single cask whisky bottled at cask strength — fewer than 200 bottles exist worldwide. It's a genuinely legendary bottling: a 25 year old single malt, and one of the very first whiskies ever released from the wood programme Dr Bill Lumsden began almost the moment he walked through the door of the Glenmorangie distillery.

A First Project, Thirty Years in the Making

When Dr Bill Lumsden joined Glenmorangie in 1995, first as Distillery Manager, one of his earliest and most personal undertakings was to rethink the cask itself. Rather than rely on standard American oak barrels, he travelled to the Ozark Mountains of Missouri to hand-select slow-growth oak trees, had the wood air-dried, and had it coopered into bespoke "designer" casks built to his own specification.

Before a drop of Glenmorangie ever touched them, the new casks were seasoned with select bourbon — a deliberate step to magnify the creamy character Glenmorangie is prized for. It's a painstaking, patient process, with a wood supply chain that still runs five to seven years today. Glenmorangie's spirit is famously delicate: fermented for just 55 hours to keep things fruity and clean, then run through the tallest stills in Scotland for maximum copper contact and the lightest, most fragrant spirit the distillery can make. A spirit that refined can't be dropped into just any cask — it needed wood designed specifically around it.

Cask No. 8092

Distilled on 9th July 1997, while the designer cask programme was still in its infancy, Cask No. 8092 was set aside by Dr Bill himself and left to mature quietly in Warehouse 16 for more than 25 years. It has now been released exactly as it came out of the cask — at cask strength, 52.2%, non-chill filtered — something genuinely rare for a distillery not known for cask-strength bottlings. This 25 year old single cask is a strictly limited edition: fewer than 200 bottles exist worldwide, making it one of the rarest Glenmorangie releases ever offered.

The result is exactly what that first-fill designer hogshead was built to deliver: an intensely tropical nose of mango and passion fruit with scents of ripe peach, followed by layers of toasted oak. On the palate, a soft, creamy texture carries classic Glenmorangie notes of pear, apple and lemon, with fudge, butter candy and a touch of marzipan closing on a gentle, soothing finish with a hint of menthol. It's the juicy, tropical fruit character that whisky makers spend entire careers chasing.
